Response to "Why I don't assign homework"

After reading dy/dan (Mr. Meyer)'s blog "Why I don't assign homework, I agree with most of what he said. I also feel that work completed at home does nothing but give students extra work. But with my own children and grandchildren, I have found that when the kids have homework, I keep track of what they are doing at school. Even when they have projects to do at home and the parents do a lot of it, it provided a connection between the parent and child. The time they spend working on the homework project is time spent together.

  1. Homework is a tough issue. I too see both sides--as a parent and as a teacher. For me, I think the key is in looking closely at what the homework is. If it's busy work or if a few problems rather than humpteen would have sufficed for review, we as teachers might need to rethink what and how much we're assigning. I know having kids has given me a whole new perspective on homework!

  2. I agree with you, Mrs. Walls. Tonight, we experienced the best sharing time as a family over one of Holly's assignments. She has to create a poster on one of the four types of sentences, so Holly and I began planning...Nathan reminds us that a exclamation is a baseball bat and ball (where did I miss out on that one?!); then Jay decides to practice his artistic abilities and creates a Babe Ruth for Holly to color...I think we just about impressed ourselves with our creative abilities as a family! ha!
